Our journey from Delhi to Mumbai, through Rajasthan Gujarat and Maharashtra.

Forts and palaces: re-used, converted and abandoned. Local life and local trains.

The fort at Jaisalmer is so large that there is a living town within the walls.

The only way into the town is through the opening in the centre, within which are a palace, mansions, ordinary houses and extraordinary temples:

The entrance to the temple.

Within were statues of Jain prophets.

Our guide, an upper caste Brahmin, lived within a house that almost touched the temple.

He lived with his brother's family, his children and parents, here shelling peas. His wife prepared sweet, spicy masala chai -tea- for us.

As with all Indian towns, life in the streets went on with lots to see in every direction:

One intriguing sight was the adaptation of ancient remains to modern uses

Jodhpur was even more spectacular

Next Jodhpur and an abandoned palace at Dungapur
