There are many short walks from the gate

It is hard to imagine any location with a better range of short walks.

One stage longer is the walk to Rydal.

Allow an hour walking each way, plus stopping and looking time. In June and July this makes a good evening walk. Alongside the river Rothay, Between Grasmere and Rydal lakes you can walk on either side of the river, from one footbridge to the other. From the weir at the foot of Grasmere you can walk up to the col to join the higher routes. Just beyond the col you can take the higher route past the caves, or drop down to the shore of Rydal water The only steep and rough section is from the White Moss car park up to the old corpse road. Other paths are well trodden.
